"The job with Arts provided most of my money until the last year. I wrote criticism as a mercenary and would never have written it otherwise. Since there were no set hours and since I could work at home it was a good part time job. It took three or four days to see the shows and perhaps a week or so off and on to write the reviews, which I always put off until the deadline. I can't type, which was a nuisance to everyone."

"In the pages that follow and in the exhibition this publication accompanies, the viewer will be treated to a pyrotechnic display of the graphic artist's vocabulary interpreted by some of the most provocative artists of our time. In a more conventional project, the graphics themselves would provide almost the sole focus. To contemplate them, each in isolation, is indeed enjoyable and satisfying. . . The art, the documentation, the conversations, and the background of the Graphicstudio provide an intriguing and informative view of contemporary graphics. We are able to see not only where the artists went but how they got there."

"First Impressions explores the early graphic work of forty-six contemporary American artists who are widely recognized for their contributions to printmaking. Less well known, however, are the first prints and multiples by these painters and sculptors. This study examines their earliest publications, focusing on the first editions they produced under the auspices of a publisher or a professional printer."
